We are Nosara Ocean Safety.
Our mission is to support and empower our beach town through ocean safety education, awareness initiatives and prevention training programs to keep our shores safe. ‘NOS’ translates to ‘us,’ in Spanish which is fitting, as our goal is to work in collaborative efforts within the community.
We are here to build a strong public movement in water safety practices.
We believe that with proper education and awareness of the environment, most accidents at the beach are preventable. We are committed to making sure that you and your loved ones can safely enjoy our beautiful coastline in all possible ways, and hopefully, develop a greater appreciation for the powerful and diverse conditions of the ocean.
We have the ability to make an impact on this community, for today, tomorrow and for generations to come.
Three Actions of NOS
Prevention
Establishing and ensuring that all measures of prevention are in place. This began with leading a Beach Warning Flag Program to demarcate dangerous areas and ocean conditions, which the Bomberos Lifeguards are now able to manage. Next is creating effective beach signage to indicate hazards as well as emergency contact information and prevention materials displayed in popular Nosara establishments. NOS Water Safety Consultations and safety protocol implementation training for local businesses are also available. Finally, stay tuned on the latest ocean safety updates and conditions through our social media.
Education
We are here to empower our community through knowledge. Through educational material and trainings, we encourage everyone in our community to become more responsible beachgoers. Providing accessible safety material in hotels, home and on our website as well as hosting regular programming of ocean safety trainings and workshops for the community are both integral elements of NOS. This content and programs are for all: visitors, residents and locals, adults and children alike.
Response
NOS is the secondary support network to Bomberos de Nosara by training local surfers, instructors and key waterpeople. Through our education and training, our Surfguards are empowered to act and support in an ocean related emergency. NOS and our strong waterpeople are here to supplement existing rescue efforts and assist in ocean safety vigilance. Some of our training initiatives for our Surfguard Team include: Basic Ocean Safety & Rescue (OSR), First Aid & CPR training, Advanced OSR.
